British Values

At Peel Common Nursery and Infant  School we enrich children's learning to prepare them to become successful, global citizens through the promotion of British Values and the development of Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural understanding and attitudes.

In 2011 the DfE reinforced the need to "create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faith and beliefs." At Peel Common Nursery and Infant School we actively promote these values through our own school values and through our curriculum.

Democracy

  • Ensuring all children have a voice which is listened to.
  • We demonstrate democracy by providing children with opportunities to vote, such as choosing class rewards, role play areas and story time books.
  • In science we discuss the importance of carrying out a fair investigation.
  • Each class creates and agrees on their own unique class charter.
  • We learn to make compromises through our various types of group learning activities.

Individual Liberty

  • In many areas of the curriculum we learn how to debate, argue, defend and respect different points of view.
  • We know that we have a freedom of expression.
  • We make choices in our learning.

Mutual Respect

  • We learn how to treat others and how to maintain positive friendships and relationships.
  • We learn to respect different points of view.
  • In RE we use a range of resources to understand and respect different faiths.
  • Our school values are embedded across our school community.
  • We have daily assemblies where we can reflect together.

The Rule of Law

  • We learn about our responsibilities as part of various communities.
  • When creating our class charters we agree on individual rights and responsibilities.
  • We follow our class charters.
  • We understand our school golden rules and follow them at school.
  • We learn about taking responsibility for ourselves and our environment.

Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs

  • In RE we use a range of resources to understand and respect different faiths.
  • In Geography we learn about and celebrate different places, people and cultures.
  • We have daily assemblies where we reflect on, celebrate and learn about traditions, cultures and celebrations that are part of our Britain today.
  • We learn about and celebrate British events, traditions and significant personalities in History, Science, Geography, PE and Art.
